雪風という名の軍艦に乗り組んで太平洋戦争を戦い、戦後海上保安庁に勤務したという古老の話を聞いたことがある。雪風は戦争初期のスラバヤ沖海戦からミッドウェー、沖縄特攻まで幾多の海戦に出撃して無傷で終戦を迎えた奇跡の軍艦なので、その活躍には興味があったが、驚いたことにその古老は戦後に二度目の赤紙をもらって朝鮮戦争に引っ張り出され釜山まで行ったという。その時の船は帆船海王丸で、日本の船という船が沈んでしまって僅かに残っていた船だ。この海王丸の姉妹船が日本丸で、1930年に英国造船会社の設計で日本で建造された。進水から10年ぐらいはその優美な姿から太平洋の白鳥と呼ばれて、船乗り育成のための遠洋航海などに活躍した。戦時中は活動の場がなかったが1950年に朝鮮戦争が勃発すると海王丸とともに戦場に駆り出され、米軍の人員や貨物を運ぶこととなった。古老の二度目の赤紙とはこの時のことだ。海上保安庁の掃海艇が触雷して多数の死傷者を出したことは長らく国民に隠蔽されてきたが、日本丸は停戦協定締結まで無事に任務を全うすることができた。ジェット機が飛び交う近代的な戦争に帆船が参加した稀有な例である。
Sailing ship Nihonmaru
I had heard before a story of an old man who fought World War II on the destroyer “yukikaze”. I was interested in sea fight of Yukikaze because she was called miracle ship participated in the Battle of Java Sea, the Battle of Midway, desperate fight in Okinawa and so many battles through the beginning to the end with no damages. What I was surprised he was called out over again after the war, and sent to the Korean War on the ship. The ship he boarded on is called Kaioumaru, one of a few remained ship at that time because the almost of all ships were sunk in the war. Nihonmaru is a sister ship to Kaioumaru constructed in Japan based on the English design in 1930. During 10 years from her launching, she was called the Pacific Swan because of her graceful figure, and played an active part in the training of sailors on a long distance cruise. She couldn’t find places to take part in activity during the war. However, at the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, she was called out together with Kaioumaru, and ordered to carry out the transportation of US cargos and military crew. This was the second muster that the old man told before. It has been hidden from the people long time the injury and death of many members of the Japan Coast Guard crew that was resulted from hitting floating mine. On the contrary Nihonmaru safely carried out her mission till the cease-fire-agreement. It can be said that this is a quite unusual case which the sailing ship participated modern war as Jet-fighter flying about.
