氷川丸

　戦前の北太平洋航路で活躍した貨客船氷川丸は、山下公園（横浜）に係留され、アールデコ調の装飾や一等船室など華やかな船旅時代の雰囲気を今も残す。
　戦争が始まると軍は有無を言わさず客船、貨物船、漁船の別なく片っ端から船員ごと徴用し、軍艦に改装したり兵員や物資輸送、海上での監視活動に従事させた。鉄砲一丁を渡され「敵艦の接近を知らせろ」と太平洋上に出航させられた漁師たちの気持ちはいかばかりのものであったろう。小型低速の漁船が軍艦に遭遇したときの運命は火を見るよりも明らかである。戦時徴用船の殆どは敵に撃沈され乗組員の多くは帰らず、戦死者は6万とも10万ともいわれるが正確な資料はない。氷川丸は病院船として徴用され生き残った幸運の一隻である。

Hikawamaru

Hikawamaru had played an active part of the sea-lane with North Pacific Ocean before World War II. Now she is moored at the pier by Yamashita Park in Yokohama, still remaining its first-class cabin and art Deco style ornaments that tell us the age of opulent voyage.
At the outbreak of the Pacific War, Japanese Navy took away by requisition almost of all the ships regardless of the kind of ship type. Some were remodeled into war-ship, the others were ordered troop transportation and offshore surveillance. What was the state of fisherman’s mind, given only a gun, were compelled to set sail for the Pacific to keep watch on enemy ship coming close. It is as clear as day that the fate of those little and low speed fisherman ships encountered the war ships. Almost of all those impressment ships were sunk by the enemy, and most of the crew didn’t return. It is said the number of war dead crew was 60 or 100 thousand, but any accurate documents don’t exist.
Hikawamaru is survived luckily, in spite of commandeered ship as a hospital.
