Touji (Eastern Temple)
“Our
school is standing at the level as high as the top of five stories Pagoda in
Touji” said one of my friends who graduated from Rakuhoku High School. Long time
ago, there were two temples “Touji” and “Saiji” each side of “Rashoumon” standing
on the street called “Suzaku-Oji”, but both temples were burnt by repeated wars again and again. We can see now only Touji which was rebuilt later. The five
stories Pagoda is the highest one in Japan at 55 meters high reconstructed at
the ages of Shogunn Tokugawa Iemitsu, and designated National Treasures.
In September of 1568, Oda Nobunaga came in Kyoto accompanying Shogun Ashikaga
Yoshiaki. In the meantime He stayed his troops at the nation protection temple Touji,
which was the expression of his ambition, and took a step to unify the whole
country. There were widely spread farms in the south of
Touji until Meiji era. Still more at the ages of Nobunaga, there might be extensive
wild fields. That was very convenient for him so as to establish his military
camp of presumably 60 thousand soldiers altogether with Asai Nagamasa, and to
chase the troops of Miyoshi escaped from Kyoto. While entering Kyoto Nobunaga
didn’t entrust his troops to Shogun nor Tenno. On the contrary, the government
of Meiji composed by a mediocre person made so miserable mistake that they
consigned their troops to Tenno but not their congress. This caused later a problem
of the interference and violation of the Supreme Command, and then made it
possible the army to go out of control.
